How we make Window Graphics

We created a time-lapse video on how we make the custom printed and contour cut window graphics. Follow along with Jeff Adams, at Heritage Printing, Signs & Displays and watch the process of making full-color window graphics.

We custom print adhesive vinyls for various applications:

  • Windows
  • Vehicles
  • Floors
  • Ceilings
  • Product Labels
  • Stickers
  • Decals

PRINTING Let’s start with Jeff printing the vinyl, he’s using our HP 360, a 64” latex roll, full-color printer, which has CMYK, light cayenne and light magenta capabilities. Jeff can match the provided Pantone color of any company logo.

LAMINATING Jeff oftentimes laminates the printed vinyl, lamination provides protection and durability to the vinyl. (Not used on these window graphics)

KISS CUTTING With the printing finished, Jeff takes the vinyl to the Graphtec 8000, our plotter/cutter. The computerized plotter cuts the vinyl to the exact design, dimension and depth Jeff programs, using the registration marks he designed into the graphic, these marks tell the plotter exactly where to start, cut and stop. This is where a contour cut, also call “Kiss Cut” is achieved. Kiss Cutting is a form of die cutting where a very light impression cuts through the vinyl, not through the backing material.

WEEDING Once the Kiss Cutting is complete, Jeff proceeds to the “weeding” step. Weeding is the term for removing the unnecessary vinyl. He pulls away the large pieces around the perimeter of the graphic and uses an X-ACTO knife to precisely remove the smaller pieces between the lettering and decals.

MASKING Pre-masking enables the vinyl to easily be applied to the window. Larger printed graphics require an additional person to mask, so Jeff receives help from Heritage Printing, Signs & Displays Production Manager, Brent Thompson. Together they apply the large masking tape to the graphic. Brent makes certain the mask is adhered properly.

Jeff cuts the masked vinyl into individual graphics, that are ready to be applied to the storefront. Click here to watch our video on how to install vinyl decals.
