The Heritage Signs & Displays team of experiential graphics experts recently partnered with Winthrop University to create an immersive educational environment and celebrate their women’s basketball team in Rock Hill, SC. The goal of the new signage was to highlight the accomplishments of women’s athletics at the university and amplify the visual appeal of the university’s athletic facilities.
Heritage’s environmental graphic design team worked diligently to produce graphics that were expertly installed within Winthrop University’s coliseum. This included wall wraps in the hallways, restrooms, and connecting backrooms. Each wall graphic showcased important events in Winthrop athletics, as well as important values of Winthrop’s athletics teams while reinforcing the university’s unique colors and branding.
The origin of the term “step and repeat” has two sources. The first is that Hollywood stars would step up to have their photos taken, then would step down and the next star would repeat the same action to have their photo taken. The second origin for “step and repeat” comes from the graphic design industry to describe a graphical element that repeats across a particular printed item.
Step and repeat banners are an extremely popular type of event signs because they are easy to assemble, highly customizable, and perfect for photos at any special event. But how did they get their name?
The origin of the term “step and repeat” has two sources. The first is that Hollywood stars would step up to have their photos taken, then would step down and the next star would repeat the same action to have their photo taken. The second origin for “step and repeat” comes from the graphic design industry to describe a graphical element that repeats across a particular printed item. The repeated logos or imagery would be used to create copies printed across a large sheet, cut, and bound into printed vinyl banners, step and repeat backdrops, or other custom event displays.
The Origin of Step and Repeat Backdrops
Step and repeat backdrops themselves have been in use for decades. Their primary usage has been to promote the sponsors of events, but they are also popular when used as red carpet backdrops for event photos, which usually last longer than the backdrops themselves and ensure brand longevity. Over time, step and repeat banners became essential event displays because of their branding power and the high level of engagement they get with attendees. Step and repeat banners are powerful opportunities for companies and event sponsors to display their logos prominently and memorably.
Assembling a Step and Repeat Banner
How Are Step and Repeat Banners Made and Assembled?
Step and repeat banners are made by printing an approved pattern onto either vinyl or fabric before then being stitched or bound. The finished step and repeat banner can be rolled if made of vinyl or folded in a bag if made of fabric. The backdrop will have a top and bottom pole pocket. The horizontal bars of the banner stand can slide through the pole pockets and attach to the banner stand’s vertical bars. Extend and tighten the telescoping bars and the backdrop is ready for use!
What’s the Difference Between a Step and Repeat and a Hop-Up Display?
Hop-up displays are engineered to be assembled and disassembled quickly and reused many times. Hop-up displays come in a plastic or canvas case with wheels, allowing them to be assembled by removing the hop-up from the case and set face up on the floor. The opposing corners can be pulled apart until the fabric is stretched tightly. Compressing the corners together is all it takes to reduce the hop-up back to its compact size.
Hop-ups are similar to step and repeat banners in terms of their function, but hop-ups are more expensive because they are intended to last longer than step and repeats typically do and they’re even easier to set up and take down. Depending on how much you intend to reuse your hop-up display or step and repeat banners as well as your budget, both types of event backdrops can be used to add immense branding value to your event.

Few things are as fascinating in a public space as signage that changes as you move past it. While signage usually communicates one brand, image, or message at a time, a lenticular wall display is designed to communicate two. The ability of lenticular signs to give the illusion of changing as observers move allows all who see the sign to not only engage with the message but to be captivated by the experience of seeing it.
A lenticular wall display is a custom sign fabrication utilizing a concept that originated in the 16th century when they were referred to as “tabula scalata” or “turning pictures.” Now in the 21st century, the basic principle of lenticular displays remains the same. It is comprised of two images that are separated into vertical strips and applied to a corrugated substrate. This allows for the wall display to show two entirely different images from different viewing angles.
How Lenticular Wall Displays Work
Lenticular wall displays are typically oriented vertically to allow for the image to change as pedestrians walk past them. The change between the two images is a gradual change as the viewer moves from one end of the display to the other. Between those two points, observers can see both images at varying degrees, which attracts one’s natural curiosity to walk around the display to view both images, thus giving your company’s brand more of a chance to be remembered.
Mainly used in advertisements, lenticular wall displays can serve many different purposes, the most notable of which are brands that could benefit from showing dual images on one display. Lenticular graphics can be a unique way to get your brand noticed by pedestrians in high foot traffic areas or in special locations such as sports stadiums or public transit terminals. Used in your corporate space, lenticular wall displays also serve as a unique way to inspire your employees with company objectives, mission statements, or company values.
What Are Lenticular Wall Displays Made Of?
Whatever the goal for lenticular graphics is, there are a plethora of materials available to achieve the desired effect on potential customers and guests. Lenticular wall displays are made of a durable rigid board that is directly printed with UV cured ink and routed to exact measurements for the size and profile of dual image artwork. Sizes for large format lenticular displays can range from 2 ft. x 2 ft. to the size of free-standing walls. People often prefer lenticular wall displays made in the style of the tabula scalata for their 3D look and tactile depth.
With technological advances in the printing industry, lenticular displays can have more than two images. Many of the smaller lenticular prints, like a lenticular tilt card, have multiple images that create the illusion of motion and depth. These types of lenticular displays rely on a special film called a lenticular lens that directs the different images out at precise angles to achieve the illusion effect. However, lenticular lenses aren’t usually necessary to achieve the goal.
