Goodwill Industries Of Southern Piedmont Project Spotlight

Heritage Signs & Displays recently collaborated with the team at Goodwill Industries of Southern Piedmont to transform their new store location on Wendover Road in Charlotte, NC. This initiative included producing and installing a wide variety of signs and graphics including installing point of purchase displays, frosted vinyl, and window graphics for the sliding entryway doors and interior glass. We also installed storefront signs throughout the main showroom space, and an eye-catching vinyl wall wrap celebrating Goodwill’s positive impact on the Charlotte community.

Goodwill Industries of the Southern Piedmont: Leading the Way for Doing Good

Southern Piedmon

First opening as an independent Goodwill affiliate agency in 1965, Goodwill Industries of the Southern Piedmont is a leader in providing the greater Charlotte region with workforce development and employment. The organization has provided employment services to over 150,000 people in the state and supplies repurposed and donated clothing and many other goods. This marks the nonprofit’s 29th store in the greater Charlotte region and fourth new store this year. This comes as the organization has boldly announced plans to open 25 new stores in the next 5 years across the Charlotte area.

The communications department reached out to Heritage Signs & Displays to partner on the interior branding and signage for Goodwill Industries of Southern Piedmont’s new store location on Wendover Road. The goal for the new signs and graphics was to highlight Goodwill’s connection to the Charlotte community as well as ensure that the facility’s interior reflect this independent branch of Goodwill’s history of service and to make it customer-facing and appealing. After discussing the scope of the project and the installation parameters, the Heritage team got to work to make the interior branding come to life.

The Right Materials for an Interior Rebrand

The Right Materials for an Interior Rebrand

The Heritage team created several captivating pieces of interior signage to achieve Goodwill’s new branding initiative. For the point of purchase displays, intended to hang on the clothing racks, the signs were UV printed from 6mm white PVC and were rectangle cut with corner holes for hanging. Storefront signs bearing Goodwill’s three Rs (Reuse, Rewear, Repurpose) were fabricated from 1/2” white Ultraboard, UV printed, cut to shape, and installed using .75” brushed aluminum standoffs. An additional sign illustrating Goodwill’s commitments to career services, community, donations, and funds was made from the same materials.

The Right Materials for an Interior Rebrand

On the week of the installation, the Heritage team worked diligently to pro-actively install the signage throughout the new retail space. An adhesive frosted vinyl piece bearing the Goodwill logo was affixed to the sliding doors of the Goodwill entrance to add style and brand identity upon entering the space. Point of purchase displays were affixed to the clothing racks and new custom signs were hung above the rest of the displays.

The Right Materials for an Interior Rebrand

In the back of the facility, a wall wrap was installed to shed light on Goodwill Institute of Southern Piedmont’s continual mission to connect goods, jobs, opportunities, and community to Charlotte. Once the installation was complete, The Goodwill Institute of Southern Piedmont team were proud of the results of the interior branding project. The new graphics reflect the non-profit organization’s goals to achieve visual appeal for customers and the new localized signage connected the Goodwill brand to the Charlotte community.

Victory Christian Center Client Spotlight

Victory Christian Center: Ministering to the Body of Christ Since 1979

The Victory Christian Center, a non-profit organization dedicated to Christian education and activism, recently sought the services of Heritage Signs & Displays to create updated outdoor signs and vinyl wall graphics for their facility in Charlotte, NC.

Founded in 1979 by Pastor Robyn Gool, Victory Christian Center operates multiple campuses in the city and operates schools dedicated to Christian education, including Victory Christian Center School and More Than Conquerors College. The Victory Christian Center School campus was in need of updated signage for its sports facilities and reception area.

Tiara Cloud, the Marketing and Promotions Director for Victory Christian Center, wanted to align the Kings Ridge Drive campus with the current VCC branding. Specifically, she wanted to update the facility with new outdoor signage, including wayfinding signage for the restrooms, vinyl wall graphics for the concessions stand, and a new dimensional sign for the wall behind the main reception area. The dimensional sign was intended to highlight Victory Christian Center’s logo and slogan.

The Heritage team began the installation process in May 2022. The installation process underwent several phases, the first of which was the stud-mounted dimensional letters and vinyl graphics to go behind the reception desk sign. The installation team used a template for the placement of the letters to ensure that each one was lined up correctly. Vinyl was installed onto the drywall, then stud-mounted dimensional PVC was placed on top of the printed vinyl. Finally, silicone and VHB tape were used to secure the finished sign.

In addition to the reception desk sign, Victory Christian Center’s exterior was transformed with a revitalized concessions stand vinyl banner and three acrylic signs highlighting the sports team facilities and the sports team itself, the VCCS Kings. The men’s and women’s restroom signs were also updated to reflect the new branding and to account for the aging of the previous signs.

Leah & Louise: Creating a Custom Sign for a Modern Juke Joint

A Local Restaurant Bringing Mississippi Valley Dishes to Charlotte

Leah & Louise is a restaurant local to Charlotte, NC founded and led by James Beard-nominated Chef, Greg Collier and business partner/wife Subrina Collier. Leah & Louise is a self-described southern-inspired juke joint that brings classic dishes from the Mississippi River Valley to the Queen City. This delicious local business has earned a well-deserved reputation for excellence, earning hundreds of 5-star Google reviews in the process.

Bar

Leah & Louise is located at Camp North End, a former car factory and military depot repurposed into a shopping and entertainment venue just north of uptown Charlotte. In order to make Leah & Louise stand out among the trendy shops, bars, and restaurants, Greg and Subrina Collier reached out to the sign specialists at Heritage Printing, Signs & Displays. In coordination with Alli Cruse of Camp North End, the Heritage team collaborated with the Colliers to make Leah & Louise a prominent fixture of this trendy nightlife location.

A Sign for a Modern Juke Joint

Leah & Louise Custom Signs

When it came time to create a sign for the Camp North End location, the Colliers had the Leah & Louise logo on hand as well as a vision for what they wanted the sign to look like. Specifically, they wanted to achieve the rustic look of a modern juke joint, historically African-American establishments in the Southeast best known for their lively music and dancing. After consulting with the Heritage team on the best ways to implement the Leah & Louise logo into a three-dimensional sign, the final list of materials included a combination of corrugated metal, ½” acrylic, and solid cedar. The rust pattern was designed to be printed directly onto the corrugated metal. Additionally, standoffs were designed to be installed behind the letters so that they would float 1” away from the metal, thus projecting a three-dimensional effect and allowing the logo text to stand out more effectively. Lastly, the wood block serving as the foundation for the custom sign was stained with linseed oil to accentuate the natural beauty of the wood.

The Process of Crafting a Custom Sign

Sign Maker

Once the design was conceptualized and approved by the Colliers, the Heritage team set about to bring the sign to life. The steps that the team of sign specialists took to create Leah & Louise’s custom acrylic sign included the following:

  1. Laser-cut the Leah & Louise logo out of ½” thick white acrylic.
  2. Created a template for the letters to go into.
  3. UV printed the color directly to the acrylic to leave a white border around the individual letters.
  4. Cleaned and added UV adhesion promoter to the corrugated metal.
  5. UV printed the rust pattern to the face of the corrugated metal.
  6. Used Linseed oil on the cedar wood to enhance the natural finish and act as a protectant for the wood, since it ages gracefully and adds an amber look over time.
  7. Routed holes into the wood for the standoff studded letters and corrugated metal.
  8. Used white PVC piping as spacers to go over the studs behind each letter to complete the finished look when installed.
  9. Attached metal studs to the letters.
  10. Added adhesive to all the holes to aid in the installation of the letters. The glue held the studs upright while they settled into the holes that were drilled into the wood.
  11. Installed flush onto the brick wall of the Leah & Louise building’s exterior.

Leah & Louise Custom Signs

Greg and Subrina Collier were thrilled with how the sign evoked the feel of a modern juke joint that they had intended. The sign amplifies the Leah & Louise brand and raises its visibility among the other restaurants in Camp North End.
