How to Choose the Right Sign Company in Charlotte, NC

10 Questions to Ask Before Choosing a Sign Company in Charlotte, NC

When vetting potential signage partners in Charlotte, NC, it can be tricky to know which company to trust — especially if you haven’t done business with them before. As you likely know, your decision goes much farther than just the quality of work, after all!

If you’re in need of commercial signage for your business or upcoming event, be sure to ask the following questions prior to choosing a sign company in Charlotte, NC.

1. What services do you offer?

This question not only validates that the company can complete your desired project, but also allows you to learn if any part of the process must be outsourced. Not every sign company in Charlotte, NC offers manufacturing, design, maintenance and installation in-house. It’s important that you partner with a full-service vendor who can accommodate each of your needs and ensure the longevity of your project.

2. How long has your company existed?

Although this may seem like an odd question, be sure to ask how long the company has existed in the Charlotte, NC area. Companies who have been in business for decades not only have a presence in the local community, but also the experience to complete your project on time and within budget. While a newer sign company in Charlotte, NC may offer “competitive” pricing to gain your trust, it’s best to partner with a company that respects your budget and has been around the block a time or two (or three).

In addition, it’s important to know that the company you choose will be around for the full life of your signage. Even with the highest quality materials, your signage will need maintenance from time to time. A sign company that has been in business for over 20 years is likely to be around for the life span of your signage, as opposed to a newer company that may not be!

3. Can you provide any references?

Speaking of experience, make sure to ask your potential signage partner for a list of references. Any company can promise a successful project, but not every company has a repertoire of happy customers to refer to.

Don’t hesitate to do your own research, too! Review the company’s website, social media and Google My Business listing for reviews from previous customers. You’ll quickly gain a clear understanding of the company’s values (or lack thereof) and how they conduct business. If the company cannot produce reliable references, or has a poor review presence online, it’s best to take your business elsewhere.

4. Do you have other locations outside of Charlotte, NC?

Although this may not be a deal breaker for your upcoming project, knowing the sign company you choose has other locations outside of Charlotte can come in handy for future work — especially if you enjoy working with them! For larger, event-based businesses that travel around the country, it may be worth vetting a company who can either provide local work in another state, or has the ability to ship your project long-distance.

5. How will my project be managed?

We cannot stress this enough — effective, collaborative and experienced project managers are a critical component of a successful sign company. If the project is poorly branded, does not match your original vision or is not correctly communicated, that is the fault of the company, not of you. While every sign company in Charlotte, NC may offer project management in some capacity, not all companies provide experienced staff to manage the entirety of the project.

6. Who will be working on my project?

Following the above question, ask not only who will be managing the project, but who within the company will be responsible for the various stages of your project. Many companies use what we call “permanent temps”, or members of their organization who are working full-time, but not fully bought into the success and future of the company. Beware of these situations, as it can lead to mismanagement of your project. Employees with experience and a history at the company are always what to look for!

7. What customization options do you offer?

A good sign company in Charlotte, NC should be able to customize any signage to your liking. Ask what sizes and materials are available, as well as who will be completing the design of the piece. Even if they do not offer in-house design, an experienced project manager can understand your vision and communicate it to the designer.

8. What does the process look like from conception to installation?

Does the company handle conception, design, installation and maintenance? Ask them what this process entails, and what you can expect at each stage. Will you be required to remain hands-on throughout the process, or is the project primarily handled by your project manager? You should have an accurate depiction of the timeline and mutual responsibilities prior to choosing a sign company in Charlotte, NC.

9. Can you work within my budget?

This is a big one! While budget is likely a deciding factor, it shouldn’t be your sole determinant. Let us explain.

Just to win your business, a sign company may recommend a lower quality material or smaller size to accommodate your budget. Alternatively, they may also try to sell you on a more specialized material for no other reason than to make a higher profit. Neither of these options are ideal, as you are either left underwhelmed, or overpaying for a sign you didn’t really need.

Instead, trust a sign company in Charlotte, NC that puts the needs, design and purpose of the project before their own pockets. This way, you are presented with a product and price that perfectly align with your vision and fulfill the purpose of your signage.

10. What experience do you have with my specific project?

Take a look at their portfolio to ensure the company has completed other projects that are similar to your own. While going outside of the box is always encouraged, you want to be sure that your next signage partner has previous, relevant experience for your industry and project type. Although a first-timer may appreciate the challenge, your signage may suffer the consequences in the end.

Print Quality – Does it Matter?

How much does quality matter? The Internet provides us the ability to compare “apples to apples” and choose a lesser price or purchase from a trusted vendor. One website (that started by selling books) made searching, comparing and buying items online extremely easy.

There’s nothing wrong with being an educated consumer, that’s not what this article is about, more so it’s about understanding what you’re buying and the quality of the printed product.

We are printers, we print books, magazines, newsletters and most (not all) things paper. We also print “wide-format” which is a roll to roll printing of fabric and vinyl, our capabilities also include printing on a rigid substrate. We own a total of 17 commercial printers that have the capabilities to print a variety of quality levels. For example: our Mimaki JFX200-2513 flatbed printer provides an excellent print quality on a 4’ x 8’ board on average of 12 minutes per board. Our newest printer, VUTEk GS 3250 LX Pro, can produce the exact board in 4 minutes, at better quality resolution and it also prints white ink! Quality level does affect price, a banner to be viewed at 50’ or more has no need for the quality levels of the wall art to be installed on your office wall.

How can you determine the print quality
of the item you are about to purchase online?
You can’t!

That’s when the educated consumer in you surfaces. You can find out what equipment is being used to print your order and research the quality levels of that machine, I read online reviews, but I only trust recent reviews, the last 60 days is as far back as I go. BTW: the absence of recent reviews speaks volumes to me.

When your print must color-match your company colors, how can you be assured your printer can match it? Some printers use the “Pleasing Color” method, which is getting close to your color, but it’s not exact.

Color Grid

We have a 4-Step system to color match:

  1. We print a color grid with swatches, that are different shades of the intended color
  2. Use the Pantone color-match book to identify the correct swatch, providing the color build, AKA Pantone Color Code
  3. Edit the print file in our graphics software to match the code
  4. Print a test on the desired substrate, visually compare and adjust if needed to meet exact match

Mark Zuckerberg Cutouts

April 10, 2018, activist group Avaaz planted 100 Lifesize cutouts on the east lawn of the White House to call attention to what Avaaz claims are hundreds of millions of fake accounts spreading disinformation on Facebook.

The exhibition went viral on news medias: CNN, Fox News, Washington Post and social media account on Twitter and even the Mark Zuckerberg owned Facebook. Spectrum News ROC tweeted a short video of the cutouts on the lawn, demonstrating how life size and realistic the promotional items are.

Heritage Printing, Signs & Displays was contacted by Avaaz to make the Zuckerberg cutouts, used in the White House demonstration. Our ability to full color print and contour cut signage is impressive. Our flatbed printer produced the 100 promotional items in 5 hours with our CNC router working simultaneously to expedite the process.

The Fix Fakebook custom cutouts were printed on a coroplast substrate, therefore technically not a cardboard cutout as being referred to in many media venues, coroplast is an excellent option for quality and value. We made cutouts to accept a wooden stake, used to plant the cutouts on the lawn, even with mild winds, the Zuckerberg’s stood tall.

The Fix Fakebook standees are 72” tall, demonstrating our ability to easily produce large cutouts for many purposes. Heritage Printing, Signs & Displays Production Manager, Brent Thompson was quoted “We produce a lot of cutouts, when I learned we were making 100 Zuckerberg’s, I knew it would go viral.”
